Howland Public Library Community Room
313 Main Street
The Howland Public Library is pleased to present Between the Lines, the second annual exhibition of student artwork from the Beacon City School District. The library is excited to once again be collaborating with the Beacon City Schools and the Beacon Arts and Education Foundation to showcase the creative work of Beacon’s youth. This annual exhibition features a selection of artwork from Beacon High School, Rombout Middle School, Glenham Elementary School, J.V. Forrestal Elementary School, Sargent Elementary School, and South Avenue Elementary School. The exhibition was organized with assistance from Claudine Farley, District Art Department Coordinator and art instructors; Allison DeLisi, Sallie Farkus, Mark Lyon, Sergio Perez, Cathy Pezzo, Edmund Trad, and Susan Wurtz. The work on view is just a small sample of the creative work being done by students of all ages throughout the school district.
Also on view will be the entire Rombout Middle School "I'm Tired Project." In December 2016, The "I'm Tired" Project co-founder Paula Akpan and Teaching Artist/Project Coordinator, Donna Mikkelsen conducted workshops on micro-agressions, stereotypes and assumptions with the entire student body at Beacon's Rombout Middle School. Each of the 600+ students were invited to write their own statement and accompanying explanation on paper. The statements were then written on the students' hands and photographed. A small selection of the over 600 photographs have been on view at the middle school; this is the first time that all of the photographs can be viewed at the same time.
The Community Room is open during regular library hours. Please note the gallery may not be accessible during some library programs. Please call the library at 845-831-1134 or consult the library calendar at beaconlibrary.org before planning your visit.
